Sunday’s Gospel begins with Jesus asking “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” Peter’s answer reveals a clarity about who Jesus is, a clarity that he shares with Paul. Their willingness to act on that understanding of Jesus is the basis for everything that will follow in each of their lives.
Jesus’ statement that “I will build my Church” helps us to see more clearly what has been entrusted to Peter and to Paul, and (most importantly) Who is the builder. Growing out of their understanding of who Jesus is, the greatness of both Peter and Paul lies in their willingness to let Jesus draw them close to him and to let him do the building.
That Jesus would begin with someone like Peter and build on that beginning with someone like Paul is a sign to us that whatever this is about, it is not about perfect people or perfect performance. It shows us that there is a place in his Church for us too, if we are willing to let Jesus draw us close to him and to let him do the building.
