So you hear someone say something that sounds like a passing remark.
Then later something happens. And suddenly you see the deeper meaning to what you thought was just an off-hand comment.
Sometimes this Sunday gets called “Good Shepherd” Sunday (for obvious reasons).
But it really should be “So that’s what that meant!” Sunday.” Or “Oh, now I get it!” Sunday.”
Sunday’s Gospel is a throwback to the pre-Easter teachings of Jesus. And looking back at it from after the Resurrection, suddenly the deeper meaning to what Jesus was saying becomes clear.
The same thing is true for just about everything that Jesus says or does. We really don’t have the full meaning without His death and resurrection.
