Next Sunday is the end of Ordinary Time. We’re almost done with the church year, and the readings are all about the last things. Death and resurrection, hell and heaven.
The parts of the Bible that talk about the last things are full of allegory and symbolism. Sometimes they get misunderstood. To the point that some people see them as predicting the apocalypse.
Growing up Protestant, it seemed like every few years somebody would come out with their own literal reading of these passages. With dates for different things to happen. But they never did.
Which misses the whole point. They’re not the calendar for the apocalypse.
The readings point to something much deeper.
