At least I didn't kill anybody

Sin.  It’s something you don’t hear about much.  Nobody really wants to think about it.

Or if I do, it’s usually something pretty extreme.  And something someone else is doing.  Definitely not something that I’m doing.

Which completely misses the point.  Because sin isn’t just the obvious, the big ticket stuff.  It’s all of the little stuff too.  All of the little stuff that I put between me and God.

And all the little stuff does just as good a job of separating me from God as all of the over-dramatic examples that don’t apply to me (“at least I didn’t kill anybody…”).

And it’s that realization of separation that we see in Sunday’s first reading (Nehemiah).

More on this tomorrow.   Readings for Sunday
