It's better than that.

Sunday’s Old Testament (Genesis) is Abraham’s almost sacrifice of Isaac.  It’s hard to read a matter-of-fact depiction of what is (literally) inches away from being murder without reacting strongly to it.  To us, it’s unthinkable.  Which can make it hard to see what’s going on here.

The Old Testament is full of references to human sacrifice by various cultures, and God called Abraham from one of those cultures.  To Abraham, that a god would demand human sacrifice was no surprise.  Given Abraham's response, it's probably what he expected.

So I go to my usual place for lunch and order my favorite sandwich, but this time it's on the house.  Turns out they've got a buy 9, get number 10 for free deal I didn't know about.  It's not what I expected.  It's better than that.

In a way, it's like what happens with Abraham.  It's not what Abraham expected.  It's better than that.

More on this tomorrow
