One time in confirmation class, I asked students about their impressions of Jesus' public ministry. They mentioned various miracles. A few of them brought up the Beatitudes ("blessed are the peacemakers," etc.).
Without really thinking about it, it's pretty much the take on Jesus most of us have. Full of words like kind, healing, gentle. Jesus feeding the hungry and healing the sick.
While it's all true, it's not all that's true. Because Jesus is so loving and so approachable, it's easy to lose sight of the big picture. Which is the point of Sunday's first reading (Daniel).
So which is it, the confirmation class or the first reading? The short answer, "both."
