One of the classic tropes of infomercials is the “bonus.” First they tell you all about what they’re selling. Then they tell you about all of the extra stuff they’re going to throw in.
Stuff you didn’t ask for. Stuff you probably don’t even want. Much less actually need.
In Sunday’s first reading (Exodus), after all that God has done for them, God’s people are ungrateful. And whiny. So whiny, that they tell Moses and Aaron that they wish they were dead.
God ignores their whining. And instead, God gives them a bonus. A bonus they really want, and one they actually need.
More on this tomorrow.
