But wait…there’s myrrh.

So just what does the Epiphany of the Lord reveal?

The answer grows out of Sunday’s Old Testament reading (Isaiah), which starts off like all of the Isaiah readings during Advent.  Full of restoration and the glory of the Lord, at first glance it seems like just another reading about how things will be when Christ comes.

The Advent readings focus on God’s people and the good that would happen to them.  Foreign nations and kings were mentioned (if at all) as enemies to be delivered from.  But there’s something different here.

Foreigners are included in God’s plan.  They will be walking by the light of God, and they’re bringing some very specific gifts.  So where is all of this leading?

More on this tomorrow.
