With most things, there’s almost always more than one way to do it. But there’s always a way to do it wrong. A way that completely misses the point. And maybe even ruins everything.
The Bible has a lot of cautionary tales, things that went wrong. Sometimes horribly wrong. They’re the backstories for the “don’ts” we run into in the readings.
The “don’ts” are there for a bunch of reasons.
In the first part of Sunday’s Gospel (John) shows us what those reasons aren’t. When they drag the woman before Jesus to be condemned, they completely miss the point. It’s a great example, if we’re into doing it wrong.
