Sunday's first reading (Isaiah) opens with vindication and recompense. But it's a version of vindication and recompense that has nothing to do with revenge. So what is it?
It's God's version of vindication and recompense. Which is anything but vengeful. Instead, God's focus is on a relationship - the relationship between God and God's people, His beloved.
God's vindication, God's recompense is directed towards making things right. Towards vindicating His beloved. Not by striking down anyone who did them wrong, but by making His beloved whole.
Which tells us a lot about God. And the relationship that God wants to have.
For God, it's all about His beloved.
