How may I ignore you today?

As if to prove that God doesn’t call the qualified, God qualifies the called, this Sunday’s Old Testament reading is from Jonah.  When someone mentions Jonah, we usually think of the whale (and not much else).  But there’s a lot more to Jonah than just the whale.

In the verses leading up to Sunday’s reading, we see Jonah called by God.  Unlike Samuel, there’s no confusion – Jonah hears God’s call.  Jonah knows exactly what God wants.  And Jonah wants nothing to do with it.

Sometimes when we need customer service, actually getting it can be frustrating.  It’s aggravating when we have to wait, and wait, and wait for help.  But nothing makes us angrier than when we finally get through and the person we get is working hard - to avoid helping us.

And that’s how Jonah treats God.  But God doesn’t react the way we might want to, by paying Jonah back.  God responds to Jonah in a much different way.  More on this tomorrow.
