Sunday’s Gospel’s (John) show us what the “don’ts” are not for. Using them to condemn others? That’s not how this works.
Using the “don’ts” on ourselves, so we can condemn ourselves? Don’t waste time waiting for other people to do it, and go right to self-condemnation?
That’s not how this works either.
Then what’s the point?
At bottom, the “don’ts” are all ways of making it all about me. Very effective ways of walling myself off from God and other people. And that’s the last thing that God wants for any of us.
Which is why the last thing that Jesus says in the Gospel is so important.
