Sometimes a friend will say something kind of casually, and it will just seem like a passing remark. Then later something happens, and suddenly the meaning of what you thought was just an off-hand comment becomes very clear.
Sometimes this Sunday gets called “Good Shepherd” Sunday (for obvious reasons). But it really should be “So that’s what that meant!” Sunday.” Or “Oh, now I get it!” Sunday.”
This Sunday’s Gospel (John) is a throwback to the pre-Easter teachings of Jesus. And looking back at it from after the Resurrection, suddenly what Jesus was really saying becomes clear.
And the same thing is true for just about everything that Jesus says or does. We really don’t have the full meaning without his death and resurrection.
More on this tomorrow.
