The last two Sundays, the Gospels were all about John the Baptist. The odd yet heroic figure calls people to repent, talks about the one who is to come after him, and is the center of everything. John is the face of Advent.
So where did he go? John is nowhere to be seen in Sunday’s Gospel. Did the Church run out of ideas and use BibleDice.com or some other random bible verse generator to pick a Gospel for Sunday?
Not at all. In Sunday's Gospel, the angel mentions Mary’s elderly cousin Elizabeth’s pregnancy - to show that the impossible is possible with God. Okay, but what does that have to do with John?
John is the child Elizabeth is carrying. Sunday’s Gospel ties it all together - from the very beginning, John is the Forerunner of Christ. More on this tomorrow.
