A big part of Divine Mercy Sunday is the “why” behind Easter. But there’s more going on in last Sunday’s readings. We got to see reactions to the Resurrection, and they were all over the map.
In the 2003 movie The Gospel of John, when Mary Magdalene meets the risen Christ, they talk and Jesus tells her to let the Apostles know that he is risen from the dead. And then there’s this lingering shot of her going to tell them, slowly walking in a daze.
She’s stunned. She went to visit the tomb, found it empty, and then (literally) ran into the person she saw die and get buried there. She doesn’t know what to think.
And her honest, human reaction is exactly what this Sunday’s readings are for. Especially the Gospel. More on this tomorrow.
