The fence is not the reason for the fence.

If you’ve ever seen a playground near a busy street, chances are you’ve also seen a pretty substantial fence around the playground.  And depending on how the fence is made, it may take some effort to see past the fence to the playground inside.

It’s not that the fence doesn’t matter, but the fence is not there for itself.  That is, the fence is not the reason for the fence – what’s behind the fence is the reason for the fence.

That same dynamic is at play in this Sunday’s readings.  It’s not that the outward forms of the faith don’t matter, but they are not there for themselves.  That is, the outward forms of the faith are not the reason for the outward forms of the faith - what’s behind them is the reason for them.

More on this tomorrow.
