So out in the wilderness, conveniently located next to…nothing, there’s this guy. And he’s pretty rough, even by first century standards. He’s hairy, he’s standing in a river, he smells like wet camel, and he eats bugs.
Well, when you put it that way, who wouldn’t want to take a couple days off, walk the 20-plus miles (each way) from Jerusalem over to the Jordan to see someone like that?
And that’s exactly what was happening. People were showing up in droves to see this guy and to hear what he was saying.
John was preaching a message that’s hard to hear - the need to acknowledge our sins and to repent. And the people who were showing up in droves? They got the message.
