When you think of the book of Job, the first thing that comes to mind is bad stuff happening. Literally every bad thing (short of death) happens. And all of it to the same guy.
When all of the bad stuff happens, Job and his friends try to figure out why. After trying to pin the blame on the blameless Job, they blame God and start throwing out all sorts of ideas about God. Which tells us more about them than it tells us about God.
That's the backstory for Sunday's first reading.
The reading itself is a small part of a larger passage where God speaks to the confusion they've created. First by clearing up the basics - who God is, and who we are - in a brutally direct way. And then by sorting out our relationship with God.
And our relationship with God? More on this tomorrow.
