In the Harry Potter series, one of the classes is divination, predicting the future. Both the class and its teacher are kind of a joke. None of it makes sense, even inside the universe of the books and movies.
One of the first “predictions” tells us all we need to know. Ron interprets some tea leaves. And it’s such nonsense, it barely gets a derisive stare from Hermione.
The whole scene leaves you going “what?” Kind of like the first impression you get from Sunday’s first reading (Acts).
After being arrested for teaching in Jesus’ name, Peter and the other apostles are accused and then condemned. And their reaction? They’re happy about it.
Which seems like nonsense, just like Ron’s prediction. But it’s not. There’s a lot more going on here.
More on this tomorrow. Readings for Sunday
